In Asda tonight, I saw shelves as bare as pre-lockdown. All the things required for village folk to survive if the roads were cut off by ice and snow were gone.
Yes, us village folk might need a few things in case we can’t get our cars to the main road to get essentials like UHT milk, toilet roll and fresh meat. I can assure you that most of us won’t be eyeing up the neighbour’s fattest child in case they need some protein in any coming weather disaster, nor will the townies.
I’m not local and won’t be for another 10 or so years. I do remember living in Weymouth in 2009, when the last real snow hit. It was stunningly beautiful and a sight not seen since the 1980’s. You know what? I still managed to drive to Poundbury in my estate car. The newly virgin white world in which we lived still functioned. Yes, there was milk in the shops, and no meaty kids went missing.
Admittedly, just a year before, I’d lived in the Forest of Dean, where I’d had a fair bit of experience driving the same car through snowdrifts and over icy roads to Ross on Wye to get my psychiatric medication. But yes, I didn’t need and still don’t feel the need for an oversized SUV, as so many townies apparently do.
Be Mindful of Village Folk!
We village folk won’t easily be able to access a salted road. The nearest to me is 200 metres away, down a few lanes that were new in Horatio Nelson’s time. After that, it’s 7 miles to the nearest shop, where townies are currently looking on the internet to learn how to stuff and roast a pig or equal-sized humans and have filled their cupboards with loo roll, UHT milk, frozen peas, and tinned soup. We villagers have reasonable stocks of meat and vegetables in our freezers, but we do need certain things, as I’ve indicated above.
If you remember way back in 2020, the reason national supply chains ran out of essentials was the loo roll hoarders. Covid didn’t cause severe diarrhoea. The shelves were bare, and supply chains were strained due to panic buying. If you stock the house with 2 months worth of UHT milk, us lot out in the sticks will have to do without.
I’m not a pretty sight unless I’ve had my coffee in the morning, and it’d be no fun if I had to struggle into town just to get some milk for my morning jolt. Bear that in mind before you fill your oversized SUV up with essentials and a barbecue big enough for a small child to fit in it ahead of the coming weather event!
