Summer may be behind us but that doesn’t mean that you should settle for staying indoors for months. Autumn is a fantastic time of year to get out of the house and have some fun. The simple pleasures of kicking up a mass of golden leaves is appealing to many people and as long as you are properly dressed for changeable weather, you will find that autumn is very appealing. There is also the fact that there are a number of autumn activities in Dorset that will motivate you to get out of the house.

If you are looking to keep the kids entertained in September, heading to Marwell Zoo may be a great idea. This is because until the 1st of October, the zoo is hosting The Great Brick Safari. This is an event exclusive to Marwell Zoo and there will be more than 2 million LEG bricks in use, bringing together 25 different species for you to enjoy. The trail aspect creates more an interactive element to the event and there will be opportunities to build something of your own.

Join in the Open Day fun

September is a month that is now synonymous with the Open Day phenomenon in the UK and Dorset is involved too. One of the most pleasing locations you can visit this year is Smedmore House in Kimmeridge. This event will feature a pay at the door system but all funds raised will go to support local causes.

Anyone looking to enjoy a Waverley Paddle Steamer trip this year, on a magnificent vessel which was built in 1947 but which has been restored to a high standard, should do so quickly. This is because the last of the 2017 trips take place on 21st of September, so you shouldn’t wait too long if you are planning on enjoying this style of activity in Dorset this autumn.

If you love animals, you’ll have plenty of fun in Dorset this autumn

Animal lovers will adore the Must Be Barking dog event which is taking place on the 23rd of September at the Lodmoor Events Area. As you’d expect, this is a fantastic opportunity to see some brilliant dogs and whether you own a dog yourself or you just like dogs, this is going to be a busy day out that will hopefully give you a great deal of fun and enjoyment.

Another event that animals lovers will adore can be found at Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour with the Guided Red Squirrel Walks. This is a chance to see some of the most adorable creatures close up and in their own natural habitat, while enjoying the open air and stunning views in Poole Harbour.

You can get your October off to a flying start by attending Manor Barn Orchard in Studland Village and taking part in the Studland Apple Day. There will be a range of apple themed activities over the course of the day and you can enjoy some freshly pressed juice after working up a sweat.

An activity that combines a good walk with food is the Wild Food Walk taking place on Knoll Beach in Studland on the 6th of October. This gives you a chance to see the food that is growing wild in the local area and then you can take part in a “wild food” lunch of your own!

Hopefully that list of events will provide you with the impetus to get ready and head outside of your home. The full range of autumn activities in Dorset should ensure that you have plenty of chances to have fun this season.
