Barry Humphreys: Are Sir Les Patterson and Boris Johnson one and the same?

Before anyone had even heard of Boris Johnson, Barry Humphreys had him off to a tee. Calling his character Sir Les Patterson, cultural attache to Australia, Humpheys nailed the future UK Prime Minister.

Sir Les Patterson, a fictional character created by Australian comedian and satirist Barry Humphries, is a boorish, lecherous, and often drunken Australian politician who is known for his crude sense of humour and outrageous behaviour. Sir Les Patterson is a caricature of a certain type of Australian man who is often portrayed as uncouth, vulgar, and ignorant. However, we all know who he most resembles.

Humphries first created the character of Sir Les Patterson in the 1970s, and he has since become one of Humphries’ most famous and enduring creations. Sir Les has appeared in various forms of media, including television shows, films, and stage productions. He is often used by Humphries to satirise Australian politics and society, as well as to lampoon the more absurd aspects of Australian culture.

Despite his often offensive behaviour and language, Sir Les Patterson has become something of a beloved character in Australia and beyond, with many people finding humour in his outrageous antics and exaggerated personality.

The resemblance to BOJO is however, beyond uncanny:

Just a minute number of examples of Boris Johnson’s embarrassing moments:

  1. Getting stuck on a zip line: In 2012, while serving as Mayor of London, Boris Johnson was left dangling on a zip line for several minutes after it came to a stop halfway across Victoria Park. He was eventually rescued by firefighters, but not before photos of the incident went viral.
  2. Forgetting the words to the national anthem: During a 2015 commemoration of the Battle of Britain, Boris Johnson appeared to forget the words to the national anthem, mumbling his way through parts of the song while standing next to the Queen.
  3. Accidentally rugby-tackling a child: While playing touch rugby with schoolchildren in Japan in 2019, Boris Johnson accidentally tackled a 10-year-old boy to the ground. The incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral.
  4. Insulting world leaders: Boris Johnson has a reputation for making inappropriate or insulting comments about world leaders. He once referred to former US President Barack Obama as “part-Kenyan” and accused him of harboring an “ancestral dislike of the British empire”. He also called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a “wankerer”.
  5. Getting stuck in a Brexit bus: During the 2016 Brexit campaign, Boris Johnson famously travelled around the country in a bus emblazoned with the slogan “We send the EU £350 million a week, let’s fund our NHS instead”. However, during a subsequent media event, he became trapped in the bus after journalists surrounded it, asking questions about the controversial claim.

The genius of Barry Humphreys must also have included the capacity to time travel.
