Susan Hausberger has written a book detailing her cycle from Tyrol, Austria, to Christchurch in aid of the Macmillan Unit which cared for her terminally ill father.
In 2010, Susan Hausberger undertook a 1400km cycle ride from the Austrian Tyrol to Christchurch in aid of Macmillan Caring Locally, a charity which looked after her father during his fight with cancer. Susan, who is a grandmother of four has now written a book about her experiences, detailing the ups and downs of her journey across Europe.
Based at the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital, Macmillan Carling Locally offers specialist palliative care to patients with advanced, progressive or incurable illnesses such as cancer. An avid cycler, Susan was motivated to help the charity after the death of her father. Finishing in the grounds of the Macmillan Unit after sixteen days on the road, Susan raised over a £3000 pounds on behalf of the charity.
Susan has now produced a book charting the problems, joys and most importantly the fantastic encounters she experienced during her travels. The book entitled ‘Daily Pushed to My Limits,’ is available to purchase now on Amazon. All profits from book sales will go to Macmillan Caring Locally, allowing it to continue to provide enhanced care in an attractive and homely environment.
Neal Williams, Trust Secretary of Macmillan Caring Locally, said:
“Without people like Susan, the Macmillan Unit would not be able to offer the advanced care and support that it does to those who really need it. I am delighted to say that her book, detailing her amazing journey is now available to purchase online.”
Susan Hansberger said:
“By sharing my experiences in my new book, I hope to raise further funds on behalf of Macmillan Caring Locally. I would also like to inspire more people to donate to the charity which relies on the generosity of the local community. The Macmillan Unit was absolutely fantastic in providing my father and family with care during what was an extremely difficult time for us and this is my way of saying thanks.”
The specialist palliative care service at the Christchurch Macmillan Unit is made up of a dedicated team of inpatient nurses; a team of specialist palliative care nurses who visit patients at home and in nursing or residential care; a team of doctors; a team of physiotherapists and occupational therapists; a family support team, and a hospital palliative care team which sees patients in the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, along with a day centre which offers complementary therapies.
