Daddy love: Leading newborn photographer captures unique bond between father and baby

Father’s Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the special bond between father and child, and this collection of images by Karen Wiltshire of KW Photography does exactly that. Released ahead of Father’s Day on June 21st, Karen’s portraits show a number of doting dads – mostly first time parents – carefully cradling their newborn child.

Karen, a specialist in newborn portraiture, said: “Usually parents bring their new baby to be photographed and don’t expect me to ask for them to step in front of the camera as well, or are reluctant to do so. But as these images testify, some of the most heart-warming photographs – and some of my favourite ever shots – are ones involving dads with their newborn babies.”

These portraits were all taken recently at her photography studio in Poole, Dorset. The babies are aged just days old and are carefully held by the proud new fathers, whose expressions and body language capture their sheer joy of having recently become a father.

Explaining her favourite father and baby setups, she said: “The tiny newborn carefully curled up on the dad’s arm, across his bare chest or cupped in this hands are great poses.  The size of the tiny baby set against the seemingly huge features of the father give the images contrast and perspective, and if a dad has interesting tattoos or brings a personal prop such as a Rugby ball along to include in the shot, it makes for a fantastic personalised family photo.”

Karen Wiltshire has photographed hundreds of newborn babies since establishing her photography business in in 2012, and also trains up-and-coming newborn photographers. She was the UK’s first ‘Craftsman of Children photography’ in the UK and the Guild of Photographers’ ‘Photographer of the Year’ 2013.
