Dorset Scouts helped to raise funds for Julia’s House by taking part in The Extra Mile, sponsored by Superior, on Saturday September 23 at Buddens Scout Centre, Wareham.

The Extra Mile, which is sponsored by Superior, a leading manufacturer based in Dorset, encourages children in local schools, or groups such as the Scouts, to run, skip or hop one mile to raise funds which are then split between the school and Julia’s House.

Schools and groups taking part in The Extra Mile encourage children to complete their mile on a specific date and time. Classes can also compete against each other to see who can raise the most sponsorship. Money raised is split 50/50 between the school and Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity which supports life-limited children and their families. Schools can use the money raised to fund additional materials, trips or valuable equipment and resources.

Katie Bodman, head of training academy at Superior, commented: “Huge thanks go to the Dorset Scouts for getting involved and arranging their own Extra Mile challenge. The monies raised will be split between the Scout group and Julia’s House.

“We’re proud to be sponsoring an initiative that offers people a great way to get fit and also raise money for charity. Julia’s House hope that if enough schools sign-up throughout Dorset, enough funds will be raised for a Julia’s House nurse.”

Elizabeth Poppitt, county secretary at Dorset Scouts, said: “Our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders all had a brilliant time at the weekend taking part in The Extra Mile. Everyone ran their extra mile, some in fancy dress, whilst supporters cheered them on. There was a really great feeling of team spirit and we are thrilled to raise money for such a worthy charity.”

Laura Kelly, Julia’s House community fundraising manager, said: “We were so pleased that Dorset Scouts got on board with Extra Mile; it was great to see so many smiling faces on the day and we hope that even more children will get involved with Extra Mile in 2018. Superior was a fantastic sponsor for the event and we are very grateful for their support.”
