Increasing more visitors to Weymouth out of season is major part of the BID’s Business Plan.  Weymouth is the perfect destination for outdoor sports and activities, offering enthusiasts a large and diverse range of opportunities in and around the area.

Weymouth BID successfully launched a new event called the “BIG DORSET OUTDOOR WEEKEND” on 20th and 21st May 2017, the event  brought  together over 25 outdoor activity and adventure events in south Dorset mainly in Weymouth & Portland.  Activities included cycling, running, walking and a vast selection of water based activities. The Big Dorset Outdoor Weekend was managed by Creative Solutions (MPE) Ltd on behalf of the Weymouth BID.

Nigel Reed, Manager of Weymouth BID, said “This area is a great place for adventure sports and with the market expanding; this is the right time to promote the area. It is important that we take advantage of the growing tourism market in health and well-being and continue to promote the wide range of activities available to residents and visitors all year round.  I would like to thank all of the host venues for their support of the Big Dorset Outdoor Weekend and I hope they have a very busy weekend.”

Tris Best of the Official Test Centre said “The BIG Dorset Outdoor Weekend was a fantastic success for us. The weather certainly played its part – with wind on Saturday we managed to raise £360.00 for the Will Mackaness Trust through the Harbour Dash. It was a perfect opportunity to resurrect this legendary local race, and there has subsequently been a lot of interest in people competing in the race in the future. Despite it being windy on Saturday we introduced over 60 new people to windsurfing and 65 to stand up paddling, with many interested in have a second go in the future. We’d really like to thank the Weymouth BID for support this excellent initiative. Looking forward to 2018’s BIG Dorset Outdoor Weekend already!”

It is estimated that over 1000 people took part in various events over the weekend and if funding is available next year, organiser would like to repeat the event across a wider area of Dorset.
