With the school summer holidays now in full swing, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has the perfect fun day out for the whole family to enjoy. As part of the Orchestra’s Investec Proms in the Park, taking place in Meyrick Park Bournemouth from 11 – 13 August, the BSO’s ‘Sunday in the Park’ family fun day promises something for everyone with entertaining musical activities, performances and workshops for children and young people of all ages, and all families regardless of musical skills or experience. In a day packed full of exciting events, there will be plenty of opportunities to give playing a musical instrument a go, try something new at one of the many interactive workshops, or just sit back and enjoy a picnic whilst listening to the many musical performances taking place throughout the afternoon.

The event will be delivered by the BSO Participate team, as part of the Resonate strand of work which delivers community engagement projects across the region, enabling people of all ages and backgrounds to experience the benefits and enjoyment of live music-making. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is a cultural beacon for the South and South West, existing to give people across the region of over 10,000 square miles the opportunity to experience and participate in great art. A core part of the Orchestra’s mission is its work beyond the concert hall. Through the five specially tailored strands of activity making up BSO Participate, the BSO offers a diverse range of people across a myriad of communities the opportunity to experience the power of music, from giving children under five their first taste of classical music, right through to older people in longer term care.

The fun will kick-off from 1pm on Sunday 13 August. Bournemouth-based BSO Associate Sam Mason will be running workshops throughout the afternoon open to all. Come along and make new music on our handheld percussion and instruments, or exercise those lungs with the whole of Meyrick Park in a singing workshop; there really is something for everyone. The BSO’s partner Soundstorm Music Education Agency will also be running several workshops and activities, including ‘Songs from Scratch’ workshops, the chance to try out African Drumming and Summer Samba sessions. In addition to the packed programme of musical activities and events, there will also be big games available for families to play all day and relaxed areas out of the sunshine if you just need some time to unwind.

There will be many live performances taking place on the main stage, including the Bournemouth Family Orchestra, BSO ensembles and a matinee orchestral concert of ‘Summer Classics’ at 4pm, where the BSO’s Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association, Victor Aviat will conduct a programme of well-known classics including works by Mozart, Bach and Elgar. Then at 6.30pm, Hampshire-based folk band ‘Threepenny Bit’ will be entertaining audiences with their blend of traditional dance tunes and contemporary sounds.

The event will conclude with a performance of songs for the height of summer with Inspiration Choir Southampton and the full BSO from 7.30pm, conducted by Inspiration Southampton’s Music Director, Pete Harrison. Following Inspiration’s successful recent performance in Lyndhurst, this feel-good concert will feature pop classics including songs by The Beatles, a medley of Bee Gees hits, Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ and guaranteed blue skies from ELO, together with uplifting spirituals from the Deep South of America including ‘Down By The Riverside’ and ‘Shenandoah’, all accompanied by the full symphonic sound of the BSO. There will also be numbers from popular Broadway musicals South Pacific, where a tropical storm is brewing on the island of ‘Bali Hai’; and Hair, with the dawning of the ‘Age of Aquarius’ where Inspiration really will ‘Let the Sunshine In.’
