I love some Reality TV! I’m a Hayu subscriber and I loved Love Island. This year over 4 million people tuned in to watch the final and after reading this today on the BBC, I couldn’t agree more, with what they had to say… https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-45006627 .
My main question is this… Megan ‘reportedly’ spent over £40,000 on her plastic surgery makeover including a breast enlargement, a chin & Nose job and fillers all over the shop! Would Wes have “fallen” (and I use this word loosely) in love with Megan if she hadn’t have had all this work done?
He would maybe have fallen in love with who she was as a person but… would he have initiated something if she didn’t look the way she does now? Probably not. When her dad and brother entered the Villa it was very apparent that she had insecurity issues (We all do, but I don’t think enough to want to spend £40,000 changing what you look like as a person – I’d rather put a deposit on a house #millenial) throughout the series she made comments about how she never made friends with girls and her brother commented saying “the main thing is you made friends with girls”. RED FLAG! I don’t know what happened to Megan but any woman who says this has difficulty sustaining relationships with other women because of insecurity. She either had girls that were friends and fucked one of them over then lost a whole group of mates or is just really insecure. Fortunately for Megan, she was forced into a situation where she had no other choice than to make friends. Which is positive because she made friends with the other women in the villa.
BUT anyway back to my original point (I could write about the flaws in the series 4 Love Island relationships for days) putting these women on TV are creating a facade for both men and women. What we are watching creates completely unrealistic expectations of what we should look like (I believe a lot of nabbing the guy or gal you want is based on confidence anyway… but that subject is for another day!). It puts a lot of pressure on how we ‘should’ look. The crazy thing that got me this series was the advertising during the breaks. You’re giving us the impression we should look a certain way then selling us fake tan, teeth whitener and plastic surgery during the ads! SPOILER ALERT *YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL THE WAY YOU ARE* – Love Island is here to entertain not make us feel insecure.
Thank god Dani and Jack won. They really were the ‘most real’ in the villa. The couple with no surgery, no boob job… ok maybe the odd lip filler and veneers, but other than that you could see that they really were happy people, comfortable in their own skin. When the time came for the parents to meet the couples, Dani’s dad (Danny Dyer) gave Jack the stamp of approval and said “I tell you what Jack, proper geezer, I love the fact that you got a little derby (Belly), you’ve got so much charisma” to which Jack replies “Do you know what it’s not about them abs is it” Danny Dayer: “Nah it ain’t mate, it takes a great man to bowl into that gaff, while they’re all abbed up” and he’s right, it really does. Because at the end of the day who doesn’t want a fella who can make you laugh 24/7 and look at you the way that Jack looks at Dani!
*Disclaimer – Don’t get me wrong, I have no issue with anyone enhancing the way they look. I wear make up, get my hair done and spend hundreds of pounds on Asos every month just to feel ‘good’. But I think when entertainment programmes are subliminally forcing you to feel insecure about what you should look like and what your partner looks like, than that’s not ok.
