A vast swarm of flying ants stretching for a mile has been detected on a weather radar along the south coast of the UK, and further swarms are anticipated in the upcoming days. The Met Office identified these insect gatherings on Friday, coinciding with numerous eyewitness reports shared on social media. This phenomenon, commonly known as “flying ant day,” occurs annually during this season and lasts for approximately a week.

Simon Partridge, a forecaster from the Met Office, explained that the winged ants resemble rain showers on the radar, and their presence is particularly noticeable in the southern regions of the UK. The intensity of their flight is usually reduced during rainfall. However, due to the prevailing wet weather, no swarms were detected on Saturday. The Royal Society of Biology reports that flying ants are observed on up to 96% of days between June and September.

These flying ants emerge from their nests simultaneously for mating purposes, with males and new queens participating in the dispersal.
