Detectives investigating the death of a woman in Blandford are appealing to local residents for their assistance – with one man having been arrested.
At around 6.10pm yesterday, Thursday 7 January 2016, officers were called to reports of a serious assault at Jock’s Barbers on East Street in the town.
A 44-year-old local woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
The circumstances surrounding her death are suspicious and a murder investigation, led by Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team, is underway.
A 49-year-old local man, who sustained an injury to his wrist during the incident, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being treated in hospital.
The incident happened just inside the barbers and the alleged offender and victim are known to each other.
Detective Inspector Mark Samuel, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “We are continuing to make enquiries surrounding the woman’s death and ask anyone with information to come forward.
“I am keen to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the East Street area last night to please call me.
“Part of our investigations today will involve searching for a potential weapon that may have been discarded by the alleged offender.
“I would urge anyone living, visiting or working in the areas of East Street, Orchard Street, Dorset Street and The Close in the town to keep a look out for a knife or sharp object that may have been left near properties or in gardens.
“It is important to remind members of the public that if they find such an item, please do not touch it and call Dorset Police on 101 immediately.
“I would also like to thank members of the public who have already called in with information or given their assistance to officers in the town.”
Local Neighbourhood Inspector Rob Chalkley, of North Dorset police, said: “This is a tragic incident which has deeply saddened and shocked the community.
“I am confident we have the best expert team carrying out this investigation and the suspect was arrested shortly after the discovery of the body.
“There will continue to be a heightened police presence in the area while enquiries take place and our local policing team is there for residents, should they have any concerns.
“I would like to thank the community, at this difficult time, for their assistance and cooperation.”
A cordon remains in place at the location while crime scene investigators continue to examine the scene.
