No Nazis in Portland! Anti-racists to oppose fascist demonstration

Neo-Nazi organisation Patriotic Alternative plans a demonstration in Portland on Saturday 9 September. It intends to bring the politics of hatred and division to Dorset. Anti-racists say these modern-day fascists are unwelcome and will oppose their presence.

Patriotic Alternative (PA) includes former members of the proscribed Nazi terror group National Action. PA founder Mark Collett says, “Hitler will live on forever” and recommends Hitler’s notorious Mein Kampf.

The group is openly anti-Semitic: its social media pages champion Holocaust denial and racial hatred. Some members have received long jail sentences for terrorist offences.

Lynne Hubbard, joint chair of Stand Up To Racism Dorset, says: “There is no place for Nazi ideas and activities in Weymouth and Portland. Patriotic Alternative hopes to exploit frustration in our communities at low wages, declining services and poor job prospects. But its divisive policies would make things much worse.

“The Far Right hopes that opposition to the Bibby Stockholm barge in Portland Harbour can be turned into hostility towards refugees. We take a different view: the barge is unsafe and inhumane, and refugees deserve to be treated with respect. We oppose the barge but also say ‘Refugees are welcome here’.

“Patriotic Alternative is not welcome in Dorset. Its politics of hate have no place in our communities. Join us to oppose the fascists.”

Protest against the Nazis: Saturday 9 September 2023, 10am, Gateway Pillars, Victoria Square Roundabout, Portland DT5 1AR.
