Join the thousands of people around the UK kick-starting their 2019 in the most positive way

1st November 2018, Bournemouth, UK. RED January, a month-long community initiative, encourages people to get active every day, to beat the blues away.

RED January is a free community initiative, encouraging people to get active every day to support their mental health. You can walk, run, swim, cycle (whatever you fancy!) the aim is to get moving daily, whilst raising awareness and support for mental health. It gives people a focus during a characteristically tough month and supports ‘REDers’ through its online community.

RED is founded on research that shows physical activity can have a positive impact on your mental wellbeing and even reduce symptoms of mental illness such as depression and anxiety. In the post RED January 2018 survey, 87% of REDers reported feeling significantly better physically and mentally, after getting active every day.

Anyone wishing to fundraise, can do so for their local Mind. The money raised supports their vital work in the local community, supporting mental health services and ensuring everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets the help and respect they deserve.

For RED, January is just the beginning.  There are many REDers who continue their newfound (or rekindled) relationship with exercise into the future. RED’s mission is to promote the positive power of physical activity for both body and mind all year round and the RED community is there every step, splash and pedal of the way.

Dorset Mind’s Chief Executive Marianne Storey says “We’re very excited to be taking part in the RED January 2019 campaign again and we aim to build upon the success of last  year’s campaign. Last year several of our staff, including me, took part in the challenge and we found from experience that exercise really does boost your mental wellbeing. You gain a real sense of achievement and camaraderie from taking part in the national project alongside Mind Charity, and the online support is phenomenal.

“The best thing is that everyone benefits. You set your own challenge, whether it be simply to do five minutes walking, swimming or cycling a set distance. It means that you’re in control and can tailor your goal to your ability. RED January is a brilliant way to help start the new year. Help us raise mental health awareness – and if you can fundraise too, you’ll be ensuring that vital donations go towards helping local people achieve  positive mental wellbeing.”
