Pavilion Dance South West Summer Season 2016

DISCOVER, PLAY, DREAM: DANCE! A celebration of dance in everyday places

This July, Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW), supported byArts Council England and Arts University Bournemouth, offersa new annual event in the calendar for Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset. The beginning of July each year, starting in 2016, will now feature a series of exciting dance performances and activities that celebrate dance in everyday places and for everyone to experience and enjoy – with most free to attend.

Discover, Play, Dream: Dance! begins on Saturday 2 July with a weekend of physical and fast-paced dance. On the Saturday (2 July) and Sunday (3 July) Urban Playground Team perform Steam at Corfe Castle Train Station, offering a breathtaking blend of parkour, dance and theatre inspired by steam engines. In Bournemouth, on the Saturday, Trashdollys perform the imaginative Cape Alley, based on four characters who find refuge in a long-forgotten backstreet named Cape Alley and create their own fantasy world, in a blend of street and contemporary dance. Then on the Sunday Corey Baker Dance shows some impressive acrobatic moves on and in a red telephone box in Phone Box.

On Thursday 7 July Impermanence Dance Theatre bring the intense Da-Da-Darling to Halo nightclub in Bournemouth. This thrilling, gothic spectacle pays tribute to surrealist artist Max Ernst’s 1930 collage novel A Little Girl Dreams of Taking the Veil. It is a violent criticism of man, told through a nightmarish succession of sexually overt and religiously subversive images – where love somehow remains ever present.

For the final weekend, Saturday (9 July) and Sunday (10 July) Unkindest Cut by Sadhana Dance is installed on the Pavilion Dance South Terrace. An installation and performance, Unkindest Cut is an artistic response to the subject of young people and mental health. The installation and performance are held inside a shipping container and show the dark and captivating world of dance, light, film and sound.

There are two performances on the Saturday, an interactive family performance of The Magic Fish by ATMA Dance at Poole Park, showing a classic Indian tale retold through dance, storytelling and beatboxing. In Bournemouth the funny, musical, dancing adventure, based on the myth of Cupid and Psyche, Campervan of Love by New Art Club is performed at Pier Approach. On Sunday Company Chameleon perform the powerful duet Hands Down in Bournemouth, this contact-based male duet looks at how we manage the tension between strength and vulnerability.

Many of these works, by some of the most interesting and exciting professional dance makers in the country, have been supported in their creative development by PDSW.
