Determined to recycle, re-use and reduce all forms of waste and pollution, Poole Harbour Festival has organised a special beach clean on Sunday (8 July).
Festival organisers are calling on volunteers to gather at Baiter Park on Sunday at 10am to be ready to pick up litter and debris from the water’s edge of Parkstone Bay, past the festival site and down to Poole Quay.
“The whole reason for staging the festival is to show our wonderful town in the best light possible,” says festival organiser Ben Dyas. “We all know how dangerous plastics and other forms of waste are for our coastal waters and shoreline so if we’re able in some small way to help keep them clean then of course we’re more than happy to.”
Ben is calling on Poole Harbour Festival fans to bring their families along and take part in a fun day out with a serious message. Beach cleaners will meet in Whitecliff Park at 10am where they can collect litter pickers and bin liners. They are advised to bring their own gloves, but refreshments will be provided.
With 30 live acts on three stages, a world of great street food, free children’s entertainment, local crafts and a rare full band show by 1970s icons Mungo Jerry, whose singer Ray Dorset lives in Westbourne, Poole Harbour Festival is a treat for all the family.
The three-day fun fest at Harbourside Park on 27-29 July offers a full weekend’s entertainment with a stunning bill of top tribute acts on the circus big top main stage, as well as the best local bands. Also on the menu is a mouth-watering array of artisan-produced international street foods, local produce and crafts.
“We’re passionate about Poole and all it has to offer,” says Ben. “The festival is a great way to celebrate the town with a value-for-money event the whole family can enjoy together.”
First release weekend tickets are available at just £15 for adults (until 17 July, £17 after) and £6 for children (until 15 July, £7 after) with day ticket prices held at £8 for grown ups (£9 after 17 July) and just £3 for kids (£4 after 17 July). Under fives are free.
Mungo Jerry will headline the Sunday night line-up with Chasing Mumford, the UK’s top Mumford & Sons tribute and Tania Alboni the leading Amy Winehouse tribute. Local party starters Mother Ukers and the Jimmy Hillbillies star in the beer tent where the bar will be stocked with real ales and craft beers and ciders.
Crowd pleasing tribute bands Foo Fighters GB and Really Hot Chilli Peppers top the bill on Friday night with local outfits All Funked Up, Xander & the Keys and Punk on Your Hits with the main stage hosted by Steamhouse Rock Nights and DJ Jeff Keenan.
Saturday’s bill includes Oasiss and Stereoironics tributes with crack ska band Rat Race, Dance covers act Filta, DJ Martyn the Hat and ace locals Chris Payn, Sixteen String Jack and 27 Days, as well as sixties covers band The Newbeats.
Mr Merlin, Krazy Kev, the Mad For Animals Show, Circus Workshops and a Family Fire Showcan all be enjoyed in the programme of free children’s entertainment that runs all weekend.
Poole Harbour Festival opens at 5pm on Friday, noon on Saturday and 11am on Sunday, closing at 11pm on Friday and Saturday and 6pm on Sunday.
