Cllr David Walsh, Portfolio Holder for planning, said

“It has come to my attention that leaflets are circulating around Swanage regarding The Dorset Council Local Plan’s proposal for a Gypsy and Traveller site on Land at Washpond Lane and Ulwell Road.

While we welcome residents raising awareness of the Dorset Local Plan and the opportunity to respond to our public consultation, we strongly oppose any form of racism, prejudice and discrimination. The leaflet that was circulated included the names of Councillor Suttle and Trite we would like to stress that this was not prepared or endorsed by them.

The purpose of the consultation is to gain feedback from residents, businesses and other organisations on the proposals in the Dorset Local Plan. We don’t want to discourage people from discussing the local plan but we also have a responsibility to prevent the spread of COVID-19. For these reasons, people should not be distributing leaflets to raise awareness of particular issues in the plan because of the risk around spreading COVID”.

  1. Who will be responsible for policing them , as they do have a thing about having there own laws . I do think the local people will be paying that bill . They do have a reputation for doing what they want , Which is not in line with local residents. We have no police In Swanage now , not to call on as things happen . I lived near a camp site once the police would not pay them a visit only if they had a riot vans with them. It would not be a good idea for the town council to go ahead with this , Build affordable houses for the local residents (. It would be a massive mistake , they will not mix with the local residents )

. Build affordable house yes , put a camp of travellers in Swanage would be a big mistake

  2. Time to move out of Swanage.
The whole place will be destroyed. The reality of living near travellers is horrific.
Call me racist if you like.
    I prefer REALIST…
Such a shame to see the decline of this beautiful area. Sacrificed on the altar of idealist, liberal clap-trap.
Shame on those who initially proposed this.
