Following the global success of a video showing Ethiopian Israeli schoolgirls’ teacher messaging on a racist Whatsapp group while on a field trip, Israel’s education minister, Yoav Kisch, issued an apology to the students.

The teachers were communicating with one another in a chat room they set up dubbed “Black School Trip,” which the students discovered.

Once some girls videotaped the WhatsApp conversation behind the involved teachers’ backs, they were suspended.

On a three-day vacation last Monday, teachers and students from a religious high school in Netivot, southern Israel, were involved in the event.

Girls seated next to one of the teachers noticed her messages in the group chat that contained derogatory remarks about the Ethiopian Israeli students, which led to the discovery of the situation.

Greetings to all of the “educators” at this school, wrote a pupil while posting the video on social media. “As a member of the [Ethiopian] community, I am saddened to see how low you have sunk to. You did the exact opposite of what you should have done—become our teachers, set an example for us, and make us feel like we’re in the safest place possible. Without even realising there were students behind you, you opened a group named “Black School Trip,” ridiculing your pupils. When I look at the images, I find it hard to accept that our teachers took them.

You are a disgrace, and I’m embarrassed that you teach our children and the next generation.

Israeli Education Minister Yoav Kisch criticised the instructors, “We’ll use every measure at our disposal to take the situation seriously. I apologise for the pain this has brought the students. On my watch, there would be no room for these kinds of situations.”
