Snakes Out Enjoying The Weather In Dorset Today, But Can You Tell The Difference Between An Adder And A Grass Snake?

Snakes are beautiful creatures, and the ones in Dorset are no exception. However, many fear snakes unnecessarily, and that puts the snake at risk. It is important to treat all snakes with respect and caution, especially for the safety of the snake.

However, while humans are at low risk, it is worth considering where one walks if out with a dog:

The following is an adder that was spotted by Fiona in Weymouth out sunbathing.

And another by Debbie in Dorchester

Also in Dorset today, Steve found these wonderful grass snakes out and about enjoying the weather.

Can You Tell the Difference Between an Adder and a Grass Snake?

🐍 THE ADDER

(Vipera berus)

Britain’s only venomous snake.

  • Appearance: Look for the striking dark zigzag pattern running the length of its back. Males are grey with black markings; females are browner.
  • Eyes: Vertical pupils (cat-like).
  • Size: Usually 60–80 cm.
  • Habitat: Heathlands, forest clearings, coastal dunes.
  • Behaviour: Shy; bites only if threatened. Protected by law.

🗨️ Did you know? Adder bites are rarely serious and are very uncommon.

🐍 THE GRASS SNAKE

(Natrix helvetica)

The UK’s largest and most harmless snake.

  • Appearance: Olive-green or brown body with black markings and a yellow-black ‘collar’ behind the head.
  • Eyes: Round pupils.
  • Size: Can reach up to 150 cm.
  • Habitat: Often found near ponds, lakes, or wetlands.
  • Behaviour: Flees quickly. May hiss or even “play dead” when frightened.

🗨️ Fun fact: The grass snake is a great swimmer!

📌 Quick tip: If it’s long and swimming—it’s probably a grass snake!

🧭 IF YOU SEE ONE…

  • Stay calm: Snakes will almost always move away on their own.
  • Don’t touch or provoke: Especially with dogs or children present.
  • In case of bite: Seek medical/vet attention immediately. Keep still and calm.

🛑 Adder bites are rare and usually not life-threatening, but prompt care is advised—especially for pets.

🌿 WHY IT MATTERS

Both species are protected under UK law. Loss of habitat and human misunderstanding pose major threats. By learning the difference and appreciating their role in the ecosystem, we help ensure these remarkable reptiles continue to thrive in the wild.
