Councillors at Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Management Committee have approved a sports facilities masterplan for Weymouth and Portland.

The plan looks at how council owned sports facilities will be run and maintained in the future with a focus on handing even more facilities to community groups.

It also considers how the council can best help to sustain levels of physical activity in the borough.

The borough council launched a public consultation for the plan between January and March, with those views included in the plan’s development.

The sports strategy recognises the importance & excellent range of sports facilities we have in the area and the plan will guide how these are managed in the future.

Cllr Ian Bruce, brief holder for Community Facilities at Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, said: “We would like to thank all those who had their say on the proposals and the many groups that are already running sporting facilities.

“The council has looked at the way it manages facilities in the borough and having this strategy in place will help us to manage how the borough’s sports facilities are operated and run in the future.”

The facilities the plan looks at includes those owned and operated by the council such as The Marsh, those owned and operated by others on behalf of the council like Weymouth Swimming Pool, or facilities the council has leased to others such as Redlands Community Sports Hub.
