Newly appointed Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Susan Phillips, joined the unique Grove Hotel in Bournemouth for an afternoon tea party to celebrate their eighth birthday.

The Grove Hotel is a not-for-profit hotel in East Cliff, Bournemouth for people suffering from cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Hosting a birthday tea party to celebrate 8 years of providing guests and their families with a seaside retreat, the hotel also raised money for Macmillan Caring Locally – the charity who own and operate the hotel.

The birthday celebration was free for guests of the hotel, with all proceeds raised going towards Macmillan Caring Locally. The tea party provided attendees with a fun-filled afternoon of scones, sandwiches, live music and a fundraising tombola.

The afternoon commenced with guests sitting down and enjoying a range of finger sandwiches, tea and scones. Mike Burns, a guest who has stayed at The Grove over 30 times had the honour of cutting the birthday cake. A raffle then took celebrations into the afternoon, which boasted a range of prizes including chocolates, wine and a blender, with live music from Daisy Lapworth to bring the celebrations to a close.

Bournemouth’s new Mayor, Cllr Susan Phillips, attended the celebrations as one of her first appointments in her new role. She helped cut the birthday cake and circulated the room, speaking to guests before picking the first winning raffle ticket.

 Cllr Phillips said:

“I was honoured to be invited as a special guest at the Grove Hotel’s birthday tea party. The hotel is not only an admirable place in terms of what they offer people with life-threatening illnesses but a truly gorgeous retreat. Brenden, the Manager, was so welcoming and it was lovely to be able to talk to guests and hear about their experiences in The Grove’s care.

Brenden Howard, General Manager at The Grove said:

“The afternoon tea party was a lovely way to celebrate our 8th birthday. Guests are at the heart of everything we do here at the Grove, so we were chuffed to be able to give them an afternoon of food and entertainment.”

The Hotel’s afternoon tea party managed to raise over £250 for the Macmillan Caring Locally, which will go towards continuing to support the hotel and helping care for people.
