The Popes of Dorchester had one of the most remarkable records of any family in the First World War.  Alfred Pope, of Eldridge, Pope and Co brewery fame, had thirteen children and three more in-laws who saw some kind of serving the the War.  From the trenches of the Western Front to recruiting for the new battalions in Dorset, the family’s experience touched many corners of the nation’s war experience.

A special commemorative book was privately published in 1919, with a foreword by Thomas Hardy.  However, only two copies are now available in libraries and archives in the UK.  The writer has managed to secure a rare copy of the book and is currently blogging about the family at www.faithinworldwartwo.blogspot.co.uk.  Any further information can be sent to [email protected]#
