What was all that crap about Theresa May triggering Brexit?

All Theresa May did was deliver a letter asking the European Union if the UK could leave.

The actual leaving of the UK from the European Union can only be “triggered” by the European Commission.

This involves the agreement of at least 72 per cent of the EU’s remaining 27 states, before the UK’s departure can go before the European Parliament to be decided on a simple majority vote.

I suppose a “We do not want to play with you anymore, can we please, please have your permission to leave?” letter delivered by Theresa May does not have the same ring to it as “Triggering Brexit”.
