The new patron of The Bournemouth Youth Theatre, Timmy Matley, lead singer of the five piece vocal harmony group The Overtones, visited the school on Saturday. Timmy was treated to a 20 minute showcase of singing, dancing and acting performed by the students. He later tweeted, “I’m thrilled to say I’ve been asked to be patron of The Bournemouth Youth Theatre. I travelled down there yesterday to meet the super talented boys and girls of the school.”  He described the showcase as, “amazing group singing, fab dancing and some wonderful acting too”.

The Overtones, after being discovered by a Warner Brothers Records talent scout, while working as decorators in a shop near Oxford Street, have gone on to produce five successful albums, tours throughout Europe and appeared as the house band on a number of TV programmes. Timmy was also crowned winner of The Great British sewing bee for Children in Need in 2014. He was particularly impressed by the culture of support within The Bournemouth Youth Theatre and commented, “The way these kids supported each other and clapped for each other was so moving. They were all so excited to have me there which was so sweet. Brought me right back to how I was when I started. It was great to see so many talented boys too in the school. I’m giving these boys and girls and this fab theatre school a big thumbs up.”

Nicky Ashford, The BYT Principal, and Emma Henderson, Creative Director, said, “We are delighted and honoured to have Timmy Matley as our patron and look forward to his ongoing involvement with the school”. Timmy added“I have a fond place in my heart for Bournemouth; we have performed at the beautiful Pavilion a few times and is one of the best nights when we tour”.

The Bournemouth Youth Theatre (The BYT) was established in 1996 and provides a fun and supportive environment for young people learning singing, dancing, acting and musical theatre. They have performed shows in many theatres across the south coast and over the past five years have been involved with Pasha Kovalev and his Strictly Come Dancing Tours. Many past students have gone on to further their careers in music, film and theatre. Rehearsals are already underway for the end of year show, High School Musical to be performed at the Pavilion Dance on Sunday 20th November.

There are many opportunities and classes at The BYT. Their Mini Movers class provides introductory learning through creative play for 2-4 year olds whilst their Musical Theatre Class (MTC) provides advanced training for students aged 15+ who wish to pursue a career within the industry. The Main BYT school takes place on Saturdays between 2-5pm and offers a free trial to ensure The BYT is the right place for you. Further information about The BYT can be found at www.TheByt.com

Timmy Matley’s final comments were, “watch out guys, there are some definite upcoming TV and theatre stars in this wonderful school. Thanks for being so lovely again and I look forward to seeing you talented kids very soon”.
