Trade to EU falls off cliff and Covid is not the reason

Many will attempt to blame Covid for this dramatic decline but the reason is something else. Non tarrif barriers experienced by UK exporters and the collapse of groupage movements are the main factors at play.

A nontariff barrier is a way to restrict trade using trade barriers in a form other than a tariff. Nontariff barriers include quotasembargoessanctions, and levies. As part of their political or economic strategy, some countries frequently use nontariff barriers to restrict the amount of trade they conduct with other countries.

‘Groupage’ exports are groups of products transported in a single sealed trailer or container.

Unless the UK government can overcome these barriers and quickly then the amount coughed up for the furlough scheme will resemble a child’s piggybank in comparison.
