TRY THIS!

Try This… is a week of people teaching other people what they know and what they can do. Running from 27th September – 4th October 2014, Try This… invites you to open your mind a bit, learn something you’ve always wanted to learn or try something you’ve never even heard of before.

Try This… is made up of 42 one or two hour sessions running across six days, led by members of the local community. These will take place in a number of different venues across the town including the Shire Hall, the Corn Exchange and The Old Tea House. Every session will be free, fun and people of all ages are welcome to attend.  In all, 828 places are on offer!

Maria Clarke, who will be running workshops teaching beginners to crochet or knit says “I really enjoyed being part of last years event and am looking forward to teaching more people new skills and passing on what I have learnt”.

A wide and diverse range of free lunchtime and evening sessions are available. Some sessions contain tips and advice for everyday activities such as how to get the best out of an iPad, first aid and photography. Other sessions, including tie-dye, creative writing and how to play in a brass band provide unusual opportunities. The final Saturday morning will be spent at the Community Farm in Poundbury with sessions on bee keeping, bike maintenance and  poultry keeping followed by a bring and share community picnic – all are welcome!

Keith Hatch, a Union Support Officer with SW Unionlearn – one of the sponsors for Try This…2014 says “Unionlearn is there to support workplace and community learning, and Try This… is a brilliant initiative that brings together people with skills and offers them an opportunity to share these skills with people across Dorchester. What a great idea! We’re really keen to involve as many people as possible and support this skills share festival, both in terms of promoting it to workplaces across the county town and supporting reps running their own sessions”.

The full programme of sessions is available on Facebook – just search ‘Dorchester Try This’, and leaflets are available from Dorchester Tourist Information Centre, The Plaza cinema, the library and from the foyer of West Dorset District Council, amongst other venues in town. There will be a chance to meet the organisers and sign up to any remaining places outside Barclays Bank in South Walks on Saturday the 27th September from 10am-noon.

Reserving your place at a session is essential and can be done via the website www.dorchestertrythis.org.uk.
