Weymouth and Portland launches bumper annual events programme

Weymouth and Portland will host over 250 events throughout 2016, including numerous community fetes and fairs, world and national sailing championships, live music, art, sports championships and many seasonal favourites.

The events programme gets off to a busy start in February as it hosts the popular Dickies Quad Weymouth Beach X, the BID supported ‘We love Weymouth’ half-term fun and Portland Coastal marathon. March will also be busy with lots of Easter fun, Weymouth’s pirate event, live music at the Tea on the Quay and for sporting enthusiasts there is the mass participation half marathon and a 10k running event both starting on Weymouth seafront.

Don’t forget to find time to visit the 16th Best of Dorset Show on Sunday 5 June, a free event at the Weymouth Pavilion showcasing a year of fun and adventure taking place throughout Dorset.

All the borough’s iconic events are back in 2016 including the Wessex Folk Festival, Armed Forces Celebrations and Out loud Music festival in June, Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival in July, Weymouth Carnival and International Fireworks in August, Waterfest and the Ironman Triathlon in September, Lions Beach Motocross in October and Guy Fawkes in November.

Big sporting events will once again feature strongly throughout the year, including one of the country’s premier Ironman Triathlons. This year’s Weymouth Triathlon will be organised by Ironman, the world’s leading triathlon company and the event  promises to attract over 2,000 competitors and feature a full and half-distance triathlon. Back on the water the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy has a busy year of hosting a number of high-profile sailing events championships including the ISAF Sailing World Cup, 505 World Sailing and International Moth.

Throughout 2016 local people and sports visitors will take part in many activity-based challenges such as the BustinSkin multi-event series, Round-the-Rock 10K, 10 mile road race and Dimble Bimble Fun Run on Portland, the Weymouth 10 Mile Race and Weldmar Midnight walk on Weymouth Seafront, It’s a Knockout at Lodmoor Country Park and the ASA Long Distance Swimming Championships of Preston Beach.

July and August is always a great time to try out a new activity, why not join the fun on Weymouth Beach at this year’s Dorset Sports and Wellbeing Festival, two days of  opportunities to try water sports (Kayaking and paddle boarding), a range of land and beach activities, and general health checks and information. The two-week sports and wellbeing festival will also feature a two day Disability Beach Festival for Dorset Schools and Adults, Battens Charity Beach Volleyball event, Tag Rugby and the RAF Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic, the country’s leading two-a-side men’s and women’s volleyball championships.

Throughout 2016 the borough’s fabulous park and open spaces will host a range of activities including music, fetes, fairs and picnics organised by the park’s friends groups and borough council.
Cllr Jason Osborne, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Tourism and Culture Briefholder, said: “This year’s programme is packed full of great events and activities offering something for everyone. The many seasonal favourites are joined by some fantastic new events, making the programme bigger and better than ever. I’d like to encourage residents to come and take full advantage of this impressive community-based events programme which continues to entertain and inspire as well as to generate many social and economic and benefits across the borough.”

Steve Newstead, Chair of Weymouth BID said: “The Weymouth BID are delighted to sponsor and support the Weymouth and Portland events programme in 2016.  The Weymouth BID will continue to work on the 5-year business plan by adding new projects that help increase footfall, enhance the customer experience and support the local economy. Hosting events is a great way of delivering all of these goals to both residents and visitors.  More info can be found at our dedicated visitor website: www.weareweymouth.co.uk
