On Thursday 21st March, level 2 catering and hospitality students organised a Willy Wonka-themed evening in support of the 2012 Weymouth College Charity of the Year, Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.
The restaurant was decorated by the front-of-house students who had researched their theme purchasing costumes, posters and making Willy Wonka chocolate wrappers and giant sweets.
The catering students produced a wonderful menu that involved a lot of scientific methodology including bubble gum shapes that when water was added turned into a amuse bouche of tomato and basil soup. The starter consisted of deep fried goats’ cheese with various types of coloured beetroot.
The main course was a deconstructed beef wellington, followed by a tri of desserts that included a handmade chocolate egg with white chocolate filling in an orange tulle basket, a blueberry mousse in a chocolate tart and handmade lemon sherbet dabs.
Catering lecturer Ashley Perry said: “This is a great opportunity for students to take the lead and come up with something that will not only look fantastic in their portfolios, but also to learn the skills to produce an event of this scale. They have worked really hard to make this event work and build on the good work of last year’s students.”
Local businesses took part in activities during the evening, providing vouchers and prizes in order to raise cash for the charity.
