This tragic incident involving Georgina Mansergh underscores the severe consequences that allergies can sometimes lead to, even if they have previously manifested as mild reactions. Georgina’s case of suffering a severe allergic reaction to sesame seed oil, resulting in her passing, is truly devastating for her family and friends.

It’s evident from the account that Georgina and her family were vigilant about her allergies, actively avoiding dishes containing seeds or nuts and being cautious while dining out. However, in this instance, despite their efforts, a fatal reaction occurred, leading to her sudden passing.

Georgina and her family were visiting the Angel Inn in Ferndown in February of this year when Georgina suffered an allergic reaction to sesame seed oil in a mushroom risotto.

The absence of prior notification to the restaurant about Georgina’s specific allergy to seeds might have contributed to the lack of precautions taken in preparing her meal separately. The absence of an epinephrine auto-injector due to the perceived mildness of her previous reactions also played a role.

Nigel Mansergh’s compassionate understanding that the restaurant couldn’t be held accountable aligns with the information that the pub had met all necessary requirements and that the family hadn’t specified Georgina’s allergies during the pre-ordering process.

However, Mr. Mansergh’s suggestion regarding enhanced allergen information, both in restaurant signage and during reservation and ordering processes, serves as a critical point to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. Increased awareness and clearer communication about allergens could potentially save lives and prevent similar mishaps.

The verdict of accidental death by the coroner highlights the unpredictability and severity of severe allergic reactions, emphasising the importance of continued vigilance, even in cases where allergies have previously caused only mild symptoms.

This case echoes previous concerns raised about the need for better reporting of fatal and near-fatal anaphylactic incidents, as highlighted by the report published by the senior coroner for Avon regarding deaths from allergic reactions to food, advocating for hospitals to report such cases.

Georgina’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and potential dangers associated with severe allergies, emphasising the need for improved awareness, communication, and measures to mitigate risks in public dining spaces and beyond.
