Plans to protect Holdenhurst Village for the future and create oneConservation Areafor the East and West of the village will be considered by councillors at Cabinet next week (Wednesday, 29 January 2014).
Public consultation took place last summer on a Conservation Area Appraisal for Holdenhurst Village East and West which explains the history of the area and what makes it special and how the two areas should be protected and improved for the future.
Holdenhurst Village East and West are currently two separate conservation areas that make up the 21 conservation areas in Bournemouth. Conservation areas are recognised for their special architectural and historic interest with Holdenhurst Village designated because of its historic origins, buildings and rural setting including the village green and surrounding agricultural land.
If approved, the appraisal will provide guidance to property owners, developers and decision makers regarding future plans for the area. The appraisal will look at the following key aspects:
· Proposal to combine both parts of the village as a single conservation area
· Historic development – how the area built up and evolved over time
· Key elements that make the area special
· Key elements that detract from the area
· Possible challenges for the area
· The contribution of each of the buildings within the area
· Management proposals for the area – ideas to protect the area such as monitoring changeand removing permitted development rights.
Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment, said: “It is really important that we preserve and enhance this conservation area and I welcome the feedback from the recent public consultation which showed broad support for the area appraisal. Holdenhurst Village is unique and of great historical importance to Bournemouth and we must put plans in place to enhance this area and ensure that it is protected in the future.”
