Artwey at Weymouth Old Town Hall

CIC is opening temporary studios in the 18th century Weymouth Old Town Hall. This unique historic site dates back to Elizabeth I and Crabtree Conspiracy during our Civil War. Exhibitors’ and demonstration information will be on the Artwey website.

As part of ‘Dorset Arts Week’ – 24th May to 8th June 2014, a co-operative of 10 artists and craftspeople will be hosting this show at Weymouth Old Town Hall, with an eclectic range of work featuring paintings, photography, textile art, printmaking, digital illustration, stone-carving and sculpture. The diverse subject matter and styles cover landscapes, graphic prints, seaside scenes, floral studies, abstract images, stone sculptures and textured wall hangings.

The venue itself is worth a visit. Situated in the original High Street near the quayside, the building is a unique historic site. Its restoration and care is has been enthusiastically carried out by a group of volunteers, the Guardians of the Old Town Hall, another Community Interest Company. The Old Boot Inn, the oldest pub in Weymouth, conveniently located across the road, provides a welcome break for refreshments, food and proper West-Country scrumpy.

All the artists exhibiting at Weymouth Old Town Hall will be on site at various times during the two-week period. They will be actively working on projects and happy to talk to visitors about their inspiration, techniques and give insight into their practices. All artwork will be for sale, with a proportion of the takings donated to the Guardians of the Old Town Hall CIC.

During the weeks leading up to the exhibition each artist will be writing about themselves and their work…………………………………………………………….

The Artists……………………….

Julie Hacket

I originally studied at Newton Park College near Bath and qualified as an art teacher in 1970. I painted in oils but soon became involved in teaching and working with young people. After over 30 years of working in secondary schools in Wiltshire and Dorset, in school management and teacher training I finally retired from school life in 2007.

I have very much welcomed the opportunity I now have for my own painting and have enjoyed starting afresh, with new ideas and the time needed to follow my own interests.

I enjoy natural forms and love to explore the colour and texture of plants and flowers which are one of my passions. Up until recently my work was mainly in watercolour.

Currently I am painting larger acrylic paintings on canvas. I like to take a ‘close up’ view for my flower studies, concentrating on enlarged flower heads.

I have also expanded my interests to include local landscapes and seascapes. Most recently I have been experimenting with using strong, vibrant contrasting colours in order to create a strong sense of light and shade in my work.
