Dorset Public Urged to Stay Vigilant Following ATM Tampering

Detectives investigating a series of ATM thefts in Bournemouth are urging the public of Dorset to remain vigilant after reports of cash machine tampering across the area.

Between Friday 10 January and Sunday 19 January 2025, several victims had their bank cards retained by ATMs in Wimborne Road, Christchurch Road, Queens Road, and Castle Lane West. Shortly afterwards, fraudulent transactions were made using their accounts.

Victims reported that the affected ATMs appeared to have been fitted with camera equipment and chunky facia devices around the card slots, raising concerns of card skimming and data theft.

Detective Constable Christian Bryant, of BCP CID, stated, “An investigation has been launched into these incidents as we look to find those responsible and hold them accountable for their actions.

“In the meantime, I urge members of the public to remain vigilant when using cash machines. Check ATMs for any suspicious devices that may have been attached to them, and always shield your PIN from view.

“I also encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious activity around an ATM to report it immediately to the proprietor of the machine. This will help ensure swift action can be taken to protect individuals from potential fraud or scams.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Dorset Police via www.dorset.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55250009709. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling Freephone 0800 555 111.
