From the moment I started studying Advertising at St. Martins School of Art, way back in the late 50’s I could not understand its existence. Despite the fact I was producing TV commercials the connection between consumer and adverts seemed remote. However using advertising as a way to avoid paying taxes was obviously a big motivator of the industry.

Right now advertising has played a deadly part in cancer deaths, obesity caused by trans fats and sugars, millions at risk from climate change caused by fossil fuel corporations. For more than 3 minutes every 15 minutes TV viewers are being urged to buy, buy, buy, consume more and more.

If we want a better world where caring for each other is more important than corporate profits a first step would be to end TV adverts in our homes.
