Three local litter campaigners are asking Purbeck residents, second-home owners, organisations, businesses and visitors to share their ideas about how a litter-free Purbeck can be created at a ‘Let’s Make Purbeck Litter-free’ meeting on Thursday 14th July, 2.30pm, at Harmans Cross Village Hall, Haycrafts Lane, BH19 3EB. Short presentations by – among others – representatives from the National Trust and the Dorset Devils (a Bournemouth volunteer litter campaign) will be followed by a discussion forum so that everyone can contribute practical ideas.

Lara Manningham-Buller, Bridget Mayes and Frank Roberts – each litter campaigners in Wareham, Langton Matravers, and Swanage – are keen to find ways of reducing the amount of litter dropped on beaches, in Purbeck towns, villages, on roads and in the countryside. Lara Manningham-Buller says “We’d love to work together so that we can all keep Purbeck beautiful for everyone to enjoy now and in the future.”

They hope that from the meeting more collaboration and co-operation can be created between existing groups, local councils and Dorset Waste Partnership so that damage to the environment and harm to wildlife wildlife can be reduced and Purbeck landscapes and streetscapes can be kept beautiful for everyone to enjoy. Bridget Graham says “Litter – wherever it comes from – looks horrible, pollutes our surroundings and harms livestock, wildlife and marine life.” She stresses, “Ultimately, it damages people and communities in Purbeck.”

The trio hopes that anyone and everyone in Purbeck will play a part in combatting littering. Frank Roberts says “We’d like to work smarter on this, rather than harder. Many volunteers have worked hard to get rid of litter that’s been accumulating. We’re really keen to work out ways in which we can all can keep Purbeck litter-free – and change people’s mindsets about dropping litter in the first place.”
