Residents will notice brighter and more efficient street-lighting across Bournemouth as the Council’s LED rollout programme continues at a pace.

With the clocks going back by one hour shortly to mark the end of British Summer Time more residents are likely to be travelling to and from home in the dark. Their journeys will be lit increasingly by the new LED street lanterns being rolled out across the borough at the rate of 500 new lights a week. To date almost 10,000 of 16,000 lanterns have been upgraded with the new LED technology.

Councillor Michael Filer, portfolio holder for Transport, said:

“The new streetlights look marvellous and are helping us to build a better Bournemouth by reducing the Council’s energy bills and carbon emissions. As we move into the winter evenings more of us are out and about in the dark and will experience the improved lighting first hand. Not only is there less light pollution the light streamed is brighter, crisper and much more attractive. We are very pleased with the efficient way the rollout operation is continuing.”

Once changed over to LED lighting the Council will save around 73 per cent a year on its annual £1.1m energy costs.

The rollout operation is being carried out by SSE Enterprise. They are currently on track to complete the work in early 2015.
