Lost Dorset Walker Praised by Coastguard

A walker rescued from dangerous cliffside undergrowth near Lyme Regis has shown exactly the kind of calm and sensible decision-making that can save lives.

The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in the steep undercliff area near Lyme Regis Golf Course, east of The Spittles, when the walker became stranded after drifting away from the main path. Surrounded by thick vegetation and close to the cliff edge, they quickly realised they were in a dangerous position and made the crucial decision not to keep moving.

Instead of panicking or attempting to force their way through the treacherous terrain, the walker stopped, stayed where they were and called for help.

That single decision may have prevented the situation from turning into a tragedy.

Coastguard rescue teams from Lyme Regis and West Bay responded to the emergency, with a rope rescue technician lowered from the cliff edge to safely recover the stranded individual. Thankfully, the walker escaped without injury.

In praising the rescue, coastguards highlighted something incredibly important. The walker recognised they were lost and understood that continuing to scramble through unstable undergrowth near cliffs could have made matters far worse.

Too often, people believe they can “push through” difficult conditions, convinced that the path must be just ahead. But in coastal areas such as the Jurassic Coast around Lyme Regis, that mindset can quickly lead to slips, falls or becoming trapped in even more dangerous locations.

The undercliffs in the area are notoriously unstable, with hidden drops, loose ground and dense vegetation making navigation extremely hazardous even for experienced walkers.

This rescue should serve as a lesson to everyone heading out into the countryside or along coastal paths. Sometimes the bravest and smartest thing a person can do is stop moving and ask for help.

The incident also highlights the growing importance of technology in emergency situations. Coastguards said the walker’s use of the what3words app proved invaluable, allowing rescuers to pinpoint an exact location despite the person being invisible from the main path.

That precision can make all the difference when every minute counts.

Coastguards are now urging anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation to follow the same example: stop, stay safe and call for help rather than risking further danger.

It is a message worth remembering. Pride, panic and impatience can often make emergencies worse. In this case, common sense, calm thinking and knowing when to seek assistance ensured one walker returned home safely.
