Do you know of land in West Dorset, Weymouth or Portland which could be suitable for development?

West Dorset District Council and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council would like local people, land agents and developers to come forward with their suggestions about sites which could be suitable for housing or employment in the future.

Suggestions of any size will be considered by the councils’ spatial and community policy team as part of a joint Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment, or SHLAA, for West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland.

Leader ofWest Dorset District Council, Robert Gould said:

“The Government is keen to make sure land availability does not prevent the delivery of more homes andall councils across the country are now required to identify future sources of land for housing in their areas.

“Local people, agents and developers often better informed about where potential sites might be located and so we are encouraging them to come forward with suggestions.

“All submissions will be carefully considered but there is no guarantee that a suggested site will be considered suitable for development.”

Chairman of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Management Committee, Mike Goodman said:

“The findings of the assessment will be used as part if the evidence base of the Local Plan and support the delivery of land to meet the need for more homes in our area.

“We are interested in sites of all sizes, large and small, so if you are aware of somewhere within the borough that might be suitable for development please do get in touch.”

To find out more information, or to suggest a site with potential for development, go to

www.dorsetforyou.com/SHLAA/west/weymouth or call 01305 252386.

Suggestions must be received by Thursday 3 April 2014.

Suggested sites will not automatically be deemed suitable for development. Development on any sites considered as having potential will still be subject to planning permission.

Sites that have been suggested in previous years for this exercise should not be re-submitted unless there have been significant changes to the programme of delivery or number of units proposed.
