One hundred and seventy nine minutes of hedonistic drugged up debauchery wrapped up as a biography of Jordan Belfort a one time very wealthy stockbroker. Frankly, anyone who is tempted to sit for almost three hours in a cinema to watch this pointless film would be better served by buying some porn, a bong and then placing any savings they have on a three legged bitch at a local dog track. Watching one snort and penetration after another is tedious enough but when it lacks any substance or moral framework there is nothing left to engage the cerebral. Although the acting is terrific, especially Leonardo DiCaprio who will undoubtedly be up for an Oscar nomination, I just don’t understand why this film was made.

Belfort’s daughter has even come out and slammed the glorification of criminality and misogyny throughout. She states in an open letter in LA Weekly to the film’s director Martin Scorsese  “Did you think about the cultural message you’d be sending when you decided to make this film? You have successfully aligned yourself with an accomplished criminal, a guy [Belfort] who still hasn’t made full restitution to his victims … And don’t even get me started on the incomprehensible way in which your film degrades women, the misogynistic, ass-backwards message you endorse to younger generations of men.”

For those who are genuinely ignorant of how western society is corrupted by greed and the so called ‘American Dream’ this should be a wake up call. However, for those who are already aware don’t waste your time.
