History will be madethis Saturdaywhen Bournemouth’s town hall hosts its first same sex marriage ceremony.

Following the passing of the Marriage (Same – Sex Couples) Act in July last year from Saturday 29 March couples of the same sex will now be legally allowed to marry.

A number of same sex couples in Bournemouth have already taken up this opportunity with twelve ceremonies scheduled for 2014 so far.

Councillor David Kelsey, Equalities & Diversity Champion for Bournemouth Council, said:

“It was great news last year when same-sex marriage achieved legal recognition and a vital step for gay equality. This Saturday will be a historic moment for lesbian, gay and bisexual people, their families and their friends. It is fantastic that so many same sex couples have chosen the Town Hall as their venue to celebrate their special day.”

On July 16 2013 the House of Commons considered all amendments introduced by the House of Lords and passed the Bill which then received Royal Assent – the formal approval of the sovereign required for all legislation.
