A summary of the findings of the report in to Bournemouth sex workers by Bournemouth Links:

  • It is clear from this piece of work that Sex Workers have many complex needs. These include Substance Misuse and Mental Health problems, linked to issues with Housing and Homelessness, Sexual Health, Violence, Safety and children who are no longer in their care.
  • Good Practice should reflect the needs for effective and holistic assessment of street Sex Workers. It is important to try to understand the factors which lead women/men to becoming involved in sex work, as well as clear and concise pathways into appropriate services.
  • Secure accommodation can be a crucial part of supporting this group to exit sex work; however the number of housing providers who are able to support this level of needs is often too low.
  • An important part of addressing these issues is for the women/men to know where to go for help, having a safe secure place to live, managing health and increasing wellbeing, increased self-esteem and the potential of a meaningful “normal life” and readiness for change.
  • An open and non-judgemental partnership of co-operation, focussed on the needs of the individual is essential for ensuring comprehensive support and services for street Sex Workers. There is a need to provide a consistent holistic approach over a long time scale, providing access to supported accommodation and drug treatment.
