This government wants to crash out of the EU on January 1st which will be Britain’s Year Zero. Year Zero will be a self-imposed siege with the US ‘rescuing’ us Berlin-airlift style with chlorinated chicken, GMO corn and growth hormone beef. Out of a year of disaster capitalism the UK will emerge from the ashes as a heavily deregulated offshore sweatshop and investment hub, poorer and more unequal than ever in which the NHS can be dismantled.

We are sleep walking into this firestorm led by a government that wants to crash the economy and start again. We will look back to the Covid lockdown nostalgically as the last few months that Britain retained any decency or sanity. This government has a massive majority to do this damage and have the hit squad in place to do it – led by Dominic Cummings, Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Jacob Rees-Mogg.The financial backers of Vote Leave, including Paul Marshall and Crispen Odey, bet against the UK economy and made a fortune and now these and other Hedge Fund Managers stand to profit from the destruction of the economy and the NHS.

For businesses and ordinary people the wreckage of crashing out of the EU, compounded by the financial impact of the pandemic lockdown, will be akin to surviving a systematic bombing campaign – conducted not by the Luftwaffe, but our own government. They are bent on this destruction, have the mandate to do it and appear unopposed by Parliament or the country.

A handful of billionaires will profit handsomely from disaster capitalism – for the rest of us it will be Britain Year Zero.
