Numbers show that uptake of the flu vaccine has been lower than in previous years, particularly amongst those people under 65 and pregnant women.

Each year the vaccination protects against particular strains of flu which are anticipated will be most prevalent. This year the main seasonal flu virus currently circulating; identified as the A(H1N1) pdm09 virus, is the strain that affects children, pregnant women and adults with long term conditions like chronic heart disease, liver disease and respiratory disease in particular.

Dr Simon Watkins from Evergreen Oak Surgery in Poole said “As a practicing GP I would encourage anyone who qualifies for a flu jab to accept the offer.

One of the most commonly presenting strains this year has been identified as one which affects people with long term conditions such as heart disease, liver disease and lung disease. Free vaccination is available to these people, and also people of any age who have  certain other existing medical conditions because they are particularly vulnerable to flu, pregnant women,  and children who are under four years of age.

If you fall into any of these categories, and have not yet had a flu jab, I would urge that you contact your practice, as it is not too late to do so”.
