BiPolar UK, the national charity, estimates that 1:100 of the population suffers from BiPolar disorder. Sometimes known as Manic Depression, this is a mental health illness characterised by significant mood swings including manic highs and depressive lows.

Many are undiagnosed, and even those who are and who are receiving medication, can often feel very isolated, frightened or worried about job and family commitments. This is also true for the carers trying to help sufferers cope with mood swings, hospital committals or adjustments to new medications.

Often a friendly word or chat with others experiencing the same condition and who understand what you are going through, can make all the difference. BiPolar UK supports the formation and running of local peer support groups who meet in confidence offering mutual support or just a friendly listening ear.

The Dorchester BiPolar Support Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm at The Gallery, Durngate Street [opposite The Potters Inn]. A representative from Dorchester Citizen’s Advice Bureau will attend the next meeting on the 13th November to discuss access to benefits for BiPolar sufferers. All are welcome, sufferers and carers too.
