According to the Ministry of Justice, disgraced rock artist Gary Glitter (real name Paul Gadd) will soon be released from The Verne prison on Portland, having served barely half of a 16-year sentence. Glitter is presently incarcerated for an attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault on girls under the age of 13, and unlawful sexual contact with a minor from 2015.

According to a source at the Ministry of Justice, Glitter might be released as early as February 2023 although it is also likely he will be rearrested for crimes for which he has not yet faced judiciary justice. This occurs as Glitter, 78, is reported to have maintained a low profile and kept his “nose clean” throughout the first half of his sentence.

In February 2015, Glitter was found guilty of one count of having sex with a girl under the age of 13 as well as four charges of indecent assault and attempted rape. Of the remaining three counts, he was found not guilty. Prior to being convicted, Glitter was remanded in jail at HM Prison Wandsworth, where Judge Alistair McCreath gave Glitter a 16-year prison term.

Glitter was detained at HM Prison Albany from 2015 to 2018, at which point he was moved to HM Prison The Verne, a reduced security facility.

If Glitter is rearrested it will either take place as he leaves The Verne or when he returns to London. However, his legal representatives may successfully argue that at seventy eight he is no longer a threat to the public and he may be better served being electronically tagged and remaining in the community.

Therefore his freedom may be permanent or very short lived.

Should he die in prison or be allowed to die in his home?
