The Town Mill’s Malthouse Gallery, Lyme Regis is currently hosting an exhibition of new paintings by Julie Oldfield until 19 October.

Julie, a Lyme Regis artist, has gained a national reputation for her groundbreaking art techniques on copper and brass metal sheets. Her use of heat from bonfires, chemistry and mixed media on metal recently gained her the Derwent Special Fine Art – Established Artist award in the current 160th Society of Women Artists annual exhibition (this year online at www.onlinegalleryswa160.oess1.uk until 31 December).

‘Copper Storm’, the award winning painting, is currently on show at the Malthouse Gallery, as part of her ‘Reaction’ exhibition.

Her ‘Reaction’ work is in part a response to the contradictions of lockdown, regulation, breakout and the freedom to roam. Julie said, “ My work offers a meditative escapism that I felt during the recent lockdowns. I felt lucky to live here and gain inspiration from the freedom to walk and enjoy the coastal areas around Lyme Regis during these restrictive times.”

Julie was elected by the prestigious Society of Women Artists (SWA) to become an Associate member this year, entitling ASWA after her name, due to the recognition of her consistent high quality and innovative work. 3 other Julie Oldfield paintings in the SWA online show can also be seen at the Malthouse Gallery.

Julie commented, “I feel very honored to become ASWA! It is rewarding to be appreciated by my artist peers. Over the last decade or so, I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with new ways to create art. It has taken me on a great journey and I look forward to welcoming visitors to the Malthouse, where I can share and talk about my work.”

‘Reaction’ is open daily from 10.30 a.m. – 4.30 p.m. at the Malthouse Gallery, DT7 3PU until Tuesday 19 October.
