The far right are popping up in some unusual places. Whether it’s the gutter (which to be fair is far from unusual) to Durham University Student Union. The latest social media stench comes from a ‘Sophie Corcoran’ who is described online by observers as such:

‘a freelance journalist studying business at Durham who spends a lot of her spare time on twitter & doing political campaigning’.

‘In her own words she is, “an unashamed member of the Conservative Party” and twitter “self-proclaimed education correspondent”.’

‘She gives me the impression of a teenage combination of Ann Widdecombe and Priti Patel with a bit of Andrea Leadsom mixed in.’

I’m not at Durham and have no idea who she was before googling her now but, “Corcoran disagreed with the role of DSU president being to speak out for students on these issues; “The students can represent themselves, they’re not children.””

Speaking out for and representing students is literally why a student union exists in the first place. So regardless of anything else, she’s clearly a damning indictment of intellectual standards at Durham slipping if they can’t even comprehend basic concepts like the purpose of a union (while running for the role no less!).

Or perhaps a commentary on the state of SUs in general moving from an actual union for students to just some nonsense students do to put on their CV later without having the foggiest what any of it involves.

‘Durham student here, everyone thinks she’s an absolute donut and she’s unanimously hated’

I could not actually find one positive comment about her although I admit I did not put my flippers and snorkel on and dive in to the said sewer.

Why then is she worthy of an article?

Well like all the far right she has contributed something to the landscape that stinks of bigotry, prejudice, an empathy vacuum and a complete lack of emotional intelligence.

Now Durham is supposed to be our third best university. As someone pointed out above why is such a donut allowed to grace their hallow turf? Good question.

Imagine the entrance interview:

Why do you want to come to Durham?

Cambridge and Oxford laughed me out of the room

Why do you want to do Business?

To screw the proles for every last breath

What are your politics?

If Hitler was alive I would suck him off.

Now I am not saying Ms Corcoran would have replied as such but the fact that it has penetrated my imagination suggests a view that many have of the far right.

And prone to mistakes and a lot less clever than they think they are:

The problem with far right commentators is that whereas the left have to be intelligent and progressive/radical to get noticed the far right can be plain stupid and controversial and the corporate media masturbate to a frenzy.

Many are now thinking ‘why give a platform to this rabid skank?’ The answer is unfortunately mundane. Because given her lack of empathy and emotional intelligence she will probably be in our faces in the same way chronic acne is for so many unfortunate adolescents.

It is thus useful to have a leg up.
