Bounce Back Arts to host community engagement project

Bounce Back Arts will be running ‘True Colours’ – a creative community engagement project in Portland at the beginning of May.

During the engagement project, local people will be asked to choose three colours from the rainbow spectrum. Colours chosen will reflect community members’ personal thoughts and feelings about the past and the present of their local public spaces and places, and what hopes people have for their future.

People will also be asked to describe their reasons for choosing a particular colour to represent their memories, feelings and hopes about local places.

The top three colours chosen by the community in each area will be used in an exciting public art project to take place later in the year.

Engagement events will be held on the following dates:

• Friday 6 May 11am – 2pm, Quiddles Restaurant, Chesil Cove, Portland DT5 1LN

• Saturday 7 May 11am – 2pm White Stones Cafe Gallery, 13 Easton Street, Portland DT5 1BS

Nicky Whittenham, Founding Director of Bounce Back Arts said:

“Strong connections exist between the local community and their public spaces. Colour is a very personal choice – what is ‘vibrant’ to one person in a particular colour, could mean ‘danger’ to another – so we hope that the ‘True Colours’ project gets people thinking and talking about their own thoughts and feelings towards their public spaces, and how colour might help them describe them.

“We would like to invite as many members of the community as possible to take part throughout May. We’re very excited about the project and can’t wait to see the similarities, and the differences, between the communities’ colour choices in the three different areas.”

For members of the community who are unable to attend any of the above events, an online survey facility has been set up at bouncebackarts.com and will be available until 31 May 2016.

Postcard questionnaires with a return address are available to pick up in local businesses and public buildings throughout May, for people to complete with their colour choices and comments, before sending them to Bounce Back Arts or dropping them into local libraries.
