FACT CHECKING WEEKLY 01/4/2016

One of the reasons citizen media has evolved in to such a formidable (but very likeable) beast is that it recognises that the corporate media leave stuff out they don’t like or agree with. This results in bias and confusion amongst the public. This won’t go away but it can be partially redeemed by becoming empowered to find out for ourselves and to find sources that focus solely upon the facts and their analysis. With this in mind Dorset Eye has utilised a wonderful charity that does just this.

Every Friday we will publish their update from the previous week and enable our readers to fact check some of the most discussed and debated national issues over the previous seven days.

Some of the highlights this week:

Claim: People with disabilities are set to see a real-terms cut of £1.2 billion a year across this parliament.

Conclusion: Spending on all disability, incapacity, industrial injuries and carer’s benefits, including related housing benefit, is expected to fall by £1.2 billion by the end of this parliament. Spending won’t fall by this amount every year—it will fall by £295 million each year on average.

Claim: Spending on the main disability benefits will increase over the course of this parliament.

Conclusion: Spending on Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payments and Attendance Allowance (the ‘main disability benefits’ this claim is referring to) is expected to rise slightly over this parliament, after rising prices are taken into account. It won’t rise by as much as it has been in recent years.
