Last Friday, the government prevented a bill to stop unpaid trial shifts in the workplace.

This is a method used by some businesses to have job applicants workfor nothing, whilst they access their suitability for a vacancy. Some businesses have used this to fill in for absent, or fictitious vacancies unbeknown to the applicant.

The bill did not pass because Andrew Griffiths, the UK Government Business Minister, used a practice called filibustering. This meant he talked for so long that there wasn’t enough time for MPs to vote on the bill.

Once again, this has shown that this government is not putting into practice their commitment for a fairer Britain, but is supporting corporate greed.

Big Mouth

Update from @Rachael_Swindon:

‘Tory Minister @AndrewGriffiths is fighting a bid to pay “trial period” workers the minimum wage. But guess what? He has just admitted he hired a woman through an unpaid trial. Tory hypocrisy at its finest.’
