Commenting on the one year anniversary of Labour’s socialist Green New Deal motion passing at Party Conference 2019, Labour for a Green New Deal spokeswoman Lauren Townsend said:

“A year ago today, Labour members and trade unions came together to back a groundbreaking Green New Deal, to tackle the climate emergency and transform Britain for the many. Since then, Labour members have reaffirmed their support for this programme, with more than 2/3 of all submissions to Labour’s green recovery consultation backing our campaign’s proposals. Last night speakers from Momentum, trade unions and the youth strikes came together to demand a Labour Party which fights tooth-and-nail for climate justice.

“In March, Keir Starmer said ‘we cannot wait until 2024 to tackle the climate crisis’, and pledged to immediately fight for a Green New Deal if elected. Thus far, he has not kept his word, even as the case for a million green jobs is plain to see. The Green New Deal is more than a Labour vision to rebuild greener, fairer and cleaner post-covid – it’s a democratic mandate. Labour members demand more from our leadership.”
