Free parking for festive events

The borough council is helping support the local economy this festive season with free parking.

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council is offering free parking for Weymouth Victorian Shownight and Small Business Saturday in all council-run car parks in Weymouth town centre during the first weekend of December.

On Weymouth Victorian Shownight on Friday 5 December free parking will be available from 3pm followed by all day on Small Business Saturday on 6 December.

This means residents and visitors to Weymouth town centre can park free in borough council-run car parks from 3pm on Friday 5 December until 9.30am on Sunday 7 December.

People can also enjoy free parking in Cosens Quay car park, Lodmoor main car park and Lodmoor Country Park in the day, but people cannot park overnight in these car parks.

Normal pay and display charges apply at all other times and free parking on 5 and 6 December does not apply to on-street pay and display parking.

Cllr Christine James, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Transport & Infrastructure Briefholder said: “We are always looking at ways to support the local economy.

“Weymouth Victorian Shownight is a great traditional Weymouth event and Small Business Saturday is a chance for small businesses to showcase themselves and I fully encourage people to support both events.

“Having almost a whole weekend of free parking in the town is ideal for anyone who wants to come along and enjoy these events or spend some time in town doing Christmas shopping.”

Nigel Reed, Weymouth BID Manager said: “Free parking added to 2013 being a huge success and linking this into Small Business Saturday promotion and the Arts Council England sponsored lantern parade will help to repeat this success in 2014.

“Shownight really marks the start of the festive season and Weymouth businesses have the opportunity really benefit from this.

Car parks at Castletown, Chesil and Portland Bill, which are operated but not owned by the borough council, are not included in the change.

The free parking offered for these two events is extra to the council’s free overnight parking scheme where people can enjoy free parking everyday from 6pm to 9.30am the following day in borough council-run town centre car parks.
